BRC Certification (BRC Global Standards) is a series of globally recognized food safety and quality assurance standards developed by the British Retail Consortium. It aims to ensure that suppliers produce safe, legal, and high-quality products, providing retailers and brand owners with a common audit framework.

I. Main Types of BRC Standards

BRC standards cover multiple areas. Below are the most core and common ones:

• 1. BRCGS Food (Food Safety): Applicable to food processing, manufacturing, and packaging.

• 2. BRCGS Packaging (Packaging Materials): Applicable to all types of packaging materials.

• 3. BRCGS Consumer Products (Consumer Products): Applicable to home goods, daily chemicals, electronics, toys, etc.

II. BRCGS Consumer Products (Consumer Products Standard) Certification Process

Based on product risk and corporate maturity, the BRCGS Consumer Products standard offers two certification options: Foundation Level and Higher Level. You need to choose during the preparation phase:

• Foundation Level Certification: Suitable for lower-risk, simpler processes, or developing sectors. It focuses on basic risk assessment and management of products and processes, serving as an entry-level compliance certification meeting minimum requirements for safety, legality, and quality. The audit duration is typically shorter, about 1 day, resulting in a certificate upon passing.

• Higher Level Certification: Suitable for higher-risk products or companies with more mature management systems. It requires establishing a well-documented quality management system with detailed, demonstrable control over production processes. The audit typically lasts 2 days, and upon passing, a graded certificate is issued (e.g., AA+, A, B, C, D).

Below are details to note at each stage:

1. Preliminary Preparation and Self-Assessment (Gap Analysis):

• This is the most critical step. You need to carefully study the latest BRCGS CP standard clauses, compare them with the factory's existing management systems, documents, production sites, and operational practices to identify gaps with the standard requirements.

• Many companies hire professional consulting agencies at this stage for gap analysis or pre-audits to identify issues more accurately.        

2. Implementation of Improvement Measures:

Based on the gap analysis results, develop and execute an improvement plan.

Document System Construction and Improvement: Establish or revise all necessary documents, which may include but are not limited to:

• Quality manual, company organizational chart, employee job descriptions.

• Product risk management procedures (e.g., hazard analysis, vulnerability assessment).

• Comprehensive quality record list and document control procedures.

• Internal audit and management review procedures and records.

• Supplier management procedures (approved supplier list, evaluation records, qualification proofs).

• Detailed process validation and prerequisite program (PRP) validation records.

• Product traceability system and mock recall test procedures and records.

• Customer complaint handling procedures and trend analysis records.

• Chemical management procedures (inventory, MSDS), foreign object control procedures, etc.

On-site Rectification: Includes hygienic design of the production environment, pest control, equipment maintenance and calibration, zoning (to avoid cross-contamination), employee hygiene facilities (changing rooms, handwashing and disinfection), etc.

3. Selecting a Certification Body and Submitting an Application:

• Choose a well-known third-party certification body accredited by BRCGS, such as SGS, Intertek, BV, DNV, etc.

• Submit the application form and related documents to the body for contract review.

4. Certification Audit:

• On-site Audit: The certification body sends an auditor to conduct an on-site audit at the factory. The audit typically includes document checks, site observations, employee interviews, etc.

• The auditor assesses whether your management system meets all applicable requirements of the BRCGS standard.

• Audit Report and Rating: After the audit, the auditor issues a report. BRCGS certification results are graded as AA+, A, B, C, D. A D grade usually means failure.

5. Rectification and Certification:

• If non-conformities are found during the audit, you need to complete rectification within a specified time (e.g., 90 days) and submit a Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) plan and evidence to the certification body.

• The certification body reviews the rectification情况 and, upon confirmation of compliance, issues the BRCGS certification certificate. The certificate is valid for 1 year.

6. Maintaining Certification (Surveillance Audit and Re-certification):

• To maintain certification资格, you need to undergo an annual surveillance audit within the certificate's validity period.

• Before the certificate expires, a re-certification audit is required to renew the certification.
