The Higg Facility Environmental Module (FEM) is a core module within the Higg Index suite of tools, developed by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), used to assess and measure a factory's environmental performance.
I. Core Positioning of FEM
What is it? FEM is not a certification, but a standardized self-assessment tool. It uses a detailed online questionnaire to help factories quantify their environmental impact.
Its purpose? It aims to replace repetitive environmental audits across various industries, providing brands and retailers with consistent, comparable environmental performance data to drive continuous improvement in global supply chains.
Target users? Any manufacturing facility (not limited to apparel and textiles; it has expanded to footwear, home goods, textiles, and many other industries).
II. Seven Core Areas Assessed by FEM
The FEM questionnaire comprehensively covers environmental aspects of factory operations, mainly including the following:
1. Environmental Management System
2. Energy Use and Greenhouse Gases
3. Water Use
4. Wastewater
5. Air Emissions
6. Waste Management
7. Chemical Management
III. FEM Verification and Scoring
1. Self-Assessment: The factory completes the FEM questionnaire online.
2. Verification:
To ensure data accuracy and credibility, the factory must hire a SAC-approved verification body (e.g., SGS, TÜV, BV, etc.) to conduct an on-site audit of the self-assessment results.
After verification, a "Verified FEM Report" is generated.
3. Scoring: FEM uses a scoring system (out of 100 points). A higher score indicates better environmental performance. Brands typically set a minimum acceptable score or require factories to demonstrate continuous improvement.
IV. Clarification of Common Misconceptions
Misconception 1: FEM is a certification.
Correction: It is not a certification but an assessment report. There is no "pass" or "fail," only higher or lower scores.
Misconception 2: Completing the self-assessment is sufficient.
Correction: Only third-party verified reports are recognized by brand clients; otherwise, they are for internal reference only.
Misconception 3: FEM is only for apparel factories.
Correction: Its application has expanded to footwear, home textiles, luggage, and various other consumer goods manufacturing sectors.
